- Although RAW files need more space and post processing time, shooting in RAW will take your photography to a higher level. Most cameras allow you to save an image in both RAW and JPEG at the same. Try it for yourself by post processing a JPEG and a RAW image of the same scene.

Chapter 4: Knowledge and Planning

You should be prepared in terms of weather, equipment and knowledge when planning for a photography trip. The only way to learn and master a place is by going there several times and exploring it. If I am going somewhere for the first time, I like to use sites like Google Maps in order to have a satellite view of the location. Software like The Photographer’s Ephemeris helps you know the sunrise, sunset, moonrise and moonset timings, along with their directions and paths in the sky. If you are already inspired by photos of a location, think about how you will try to shoot it differently to make your images unique. Keep an eye on the weather also, and choose the time of the year best suited for the location by doing background research.

For places that are far away from your home location, choose a month that is best suited for photography. Try making contacts with a local photographer, or local tour guides, and get to know the weather conditions way in advance. Information of the place not only helps you pack better, but also mentally prepare for what is coming up. This applies not only to the camera equipment, but also the terrain in which you are going to be hiking and standing. For example, if the water is going to be cold, you will require long boots on the beach while you take photos. You might also want to consider a gas lamp or water proof pants for travelling purposes.

Shoot during the Golden Hours: For a landscape photographer, the best time of the day is either sunrise, or sunset. The light in the early day and evening is softer as compared to other times of the day, and casts gentle and yet defining shadows. If you have some clouds during the golden hours, that is like winning the million dollar lottery. After the sun is high in the sky, the light and shadows become harsh, the heat makes the sky look hazy, and your subject often loses definition and romance. My favourite magical moments are when the lost rays of light find the clouds and spread their palette of pastel colours in the evening sky.
